On Tuesday, public health officials stated that a single dose of the monkeypox vaccine is 78% effective. According to the officials, the effectiveness of the vaccines lasts for 14 or more days after vaccination.

Currently, Bavarian Nordic from Denmark is the only laboratory manufacturing a licensed vaccine against monkeypox, called MVA-BN. Dr. Steve Russell, National Director of Vaccination and Screening for the NHS, stated that more than 5,500 vaccine jabs have been administered across England and urged unvaccinated men who have sex with men to take up the jab.

The UKHSA stated that this conclusion was based on the analysis of the data collected from 363 monkeypox cases reported between July and November 2022 in England. The data showed that the majority of the cases were reported among gay and bisexual men. It also showed that 323 individuals out of 363 were unvaccinated.

Dr. Jamie Lopez-Bernal, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, stated that it has now been established that a single shot of vaccine can protect against the infection. He added that a second dose is expected to offer higher and longer-lasting protection.
